FAQ

How does Newspapers Search in Primo VE work?

In response to customers who found records from scholarly resources (such as journal articles) and local collections (such as records for print books) being overwhelmed by the volume of records for newspaper articles in Primo searches, Ex Libris created in 2018 an optional "Newspapers Search" feature that would segregate out newspaper article records to a separate Primo interface. In Primo VE, newspaper content is divided into two types:

  1. Newspaper content that is part of hybrid collections. This content will appear in blended Everything Primo VE searches (CDI) when Newspapers Search is turned OFF. When Newspaper Search is turned ON, it will only appear in the Newspapers Search and NOT in the Everything blended search.
  2. Newspaper content that is part of collections that Ex Libris has identified as being 80% or more newspaper articles. This content will only appear in the Newspaper Search. Therefore, to be discoverable, Newspapers Search must be turned on.

If I turn Newspapers Search ON, how does it impact the discoverability of newspaper content in the Everything blended search in Primo VE?

When you turn on Newspapers Search, newspaper content from hybrid collections that was previously discoverable in the Everything blended search in Primo VE (CDI) will no longer be discoverable via the Everything blended search. However, this content will be discoverable in the Newspapers Search, along with Newspapers Search content.

If I turn Newspapers Search OFF, how does it impact the discoverability of newspaper content in the Everything blended search in Primo VE?

When searching the Everything blended search in Primo VE (CDI), you will only see newspaper content that comes from hybrid collections. You will not see any newspaper content that comes from those collections that are 80% or more newspaper content. That content is only discoverable via Newspapers Search.

Why do I not see a "newspaper article" Resource type facet when I have Newspaper Search on?

When Newspapers Search is turned on, the newspaper article facet is replaced with a link to the Newspaper Search since newspaper content from hybrid collections that was previously discoverable via the Everything blended search is now discoverable via the Newspaper Search.

How can I see what newspaper content is included in the Newspaper Search?

On the Ex Libris Knowledge Center, download the CDI Collection List (a regularly updated spreadsheet). In the spreadsheet, place a filter on the "Newspaper Search" column:

  • “No” means that records from that database not at all discoverable in Newspapers Search
  • “Yes” means that the records from that database are discoverable in Newspapers Search AND in the main search portion of Primo
  • “Yes, Newspapers Search only” means that that the records from that database are only discoverable in Newspapers Search part of Primo and not the main portion of Primo
